The Paul Harris Fellowship Award is one of the highest honors Rotary can bestow upon a person. Recipients are Rotarians and community professionals, in recognition of their outstanding service to their community, exemplifying the highest ideal in Rotary in placing “SERVICE ABOVE SELF.” This honor accompanies a donation of $1,000 or more, in the recipient’s name, to Rotary International’s “Annual Program Fund,” which supports Rotary’s world-wide humanitarian grants, its polio eradication program, and its educational programs. The Northlake Mandeville Rotary club honored Mayor Clay Madden for his outstanding service to Mandeville. In addition, he has assisted the Rotary Club with its American Flag Program, its Christmas snow village, and its Keep Mandeville Beautiful program on the Mandeville lakefront. Presenting the coveted Paul Harris Fellowship Award to Mayor Madden are Marty Audiffred, Past President and Glenn St. John, President-Elect.

At the beginning of each Rotary year, each local Rotary club defines 15-18 goals to achieve over the coming year. If a club meets 15 of their goals, the club receives a Rotary Citation. Shown above is Tom Quinn, District Official, presenting the Rotary Citation to Marty Audiffred for the Club's performance during the 2022-2023 Rotary Year. Marty was club president during the year and Laurie Pennison (pictured on right) was the President-Elect. Both were the leaders who were instrumental in the club meeting 15 of the goals for the year, thus qualifying for the Citation. One of the primary annual goals of each Rotary club is to perform community service. During the year, 34 Northlake Mandeville Rotary club members performed over 2,000 hours of community service on a variety of service projects, meeting one of the 15 goals.

Each year the Northlake Mandeville club sends Rising Seniors to a leadership camp hosted by Rotary District 6840 which is comprised of Rotary clubs in South Mississippi and Eastern/Southern Louisiana. About 65 campers from the District attend. This year our club sent 7 students. During the five day camp, students hear nationally known speakers, and work and compete in small groups. The first third of the camp focuses on getting to know the individual, since an individual can lead best when they know their own strengths and weaknesses and have self confidence. The second third focuses on how to best lead groups. The last third centers on "Service above Self" (the Rotary Motto), showing that service to others provides a path to true joy and happiness. Each of the students described the Leadership camp as a "Life Changing Experience."Pictured above are 6 of our 7 students this year. From the left: Noah Bannan, Josh Blake, Ian Arnold, Luciana Notaroberto, Abby Barletter, Georgia Ellerman, RYLA District Chair Mike Sigler, and Debbie Stuart, Northlake Mandeville RYLA Chair.

The Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Club hosted its 25th Sunday with Scholars event at Beau Chene Country Club on April 30. This annual banquet and meeting serves as a major fundraiser for the $12,000 Rotary scholarships the group awarded to three distinguished scholars from the Mandeville area. The scholars were Emma Lockwood-Northlake Christian, Sita Baham-Mandeville High, Raina Generose-Lakeshore High. The scholarships are paid to colleges of the recipients' choice in $1,500 semester installments over four years. The students will attend at least two Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Club meetings a year to keep members informed about their studies and college experiences. In addition, the Club awarded three $1,000 scholarships. The Anthony and Hope Martin Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Julia Case - St Sholastica. The Rotary Select Scholarship was awarded to Claire Kurucar - Mandeville High. Trent Murchison, a former scholarship winner, has elected to repay his $8,000 scholarship has awarded $1,000 to Kylie Michot, a current scholar who completed her undergraduate degree at Louisiana Tech and is entering Pharmacy school. At the Banquet sponsors, local officials, guidance counselors, principals and parents of the scholars participated in a wonderful Silent Auction. A highlight of the evening was an update on their past semester by current scholars Andrew Beshenich, Natalie Lovell, Trevor Fortier, Lauren Lacoste, Celeste Guidry, Isabella Kerth, and Emma Santiago. Pictured above are Rotary Foundation President Larry Burch, Scholarship Selection Committee Co-Chairs Laurie Pennison and Doug Place.

Northlake Mandeville Rotarians have obtained a Rotary District grant and support from five nearby Rotary clubs for the last 4 years to purchase and build a playground for children whose parents visit the Safehaven campus in Mandeville for mental health services. Over 5,000 people obtained services at Safehaven in 2022. Shown here are 6 of the 9 elements which will comprise the playground. Also shown in the background are white totes containing the rubber mulch which forms the floor of the playground. Rotarians are meeting on Fridays each week to complete the installation of the equipment. A fifth grant will be applied for in May to purchase benches, additional mulch, borders to contain the mulch, and to refurbish and convert the tennis court shown in the background to pickle ball courts.

Last Friday on February 24, 2023, Rotarians worked again on the playground we are building at Safe Haven for the children of those being treated for mental issues. The difference was that on Friday we were assisted by four young people from the Louisiana Conservation Corp. LCC is part of Americorp and is like the old Civilian Conservation Corp. These young people helped us load and distribute 300 cubic yards of rubberized mulch which will be the floor of the playground. They were highly motivated, had positive can-do attitudes, and worked hard the entire morning. They were a joy to work with. Our country will be in good hands with young people like them. With their help, we were able to load wheelbarrows and spread 30% more mulch in half the time versus the previous week. Thanks to Breana, Jo, Emily, and Hunter! They are scheduled to help us for another day in April.

During the early Spring of 2022, the blood supplies in St Tammany Parish were at dangerously low levels. Rotary President-Elect Marty Audiffred identified the need and organized a blood drive through the Blood Bank of Mandeville. He enlisted two partner sponsors - the Beau Chene Homeowners Association and the Beau Chene Country Club. The Blood Drive was held on Thursday, April 21, 2002 at the Beau Chene Country Club before, during, and after the regular Rotary Club meeting.

One of our club's important missions is our mental health initiative to address the growing mental health needs in our area. Our club is committed to developing the recreation and meditation areas at Safe Haven, a multi-agency collaborative effort currently being developed on the grounds of the former Southeast Louisiana State Hospital. The club's efforts are dedicated to Ken Thompson, a very special Rotarian who died suddenly last year while serving as Rotary District #6840 Governor. Our club refurbished this lovely pavilion. Pictured here are our club members celebrating the "crowning" of the pavilion with our Rotary Wheel. Not long after we had our Annual Crawfish Boil here!

One of the most gratifying things our club does is host the Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Scholarship Program. In its 20th year, the program awards two $12,000 scholarships to local graduating seniors based on a combination of their merit, need, and community service. Our program doesn't just involve giving a check. Our "Rotary Scholars" as they are endearingly referred to, come back every semester to give us an update as to how they are doing, their academic and social achievements, and more. Our Scholars have expressed repeatedly how much being part of our Rotary Family means to them. On the far left is Rotary member Boyd McPhail and on the far right is Evans Spiceland. In the middle, from left to right, are some of our current Rotary Scholars including Ruston Keller, Kari Ousterhout, Ashleigh Touchard, and Isabel Baird. We are so proud of our Scholars

In addition to some fabulous speakers, members also participated in a service project. We helped to renovate a drug treatment center in Cozumel for at-risk youth.
