Rotarians Help Improve Learning By 3rd Graders

Rotarians distributed dictionaries to all of the 1300 third graders in St Tammany Parish during the month of October.  A Rotarian visited each classroom, distributed the dictionaries to each individual, described the Rotary organization, had them read the Four Way Test of Rotary which is included inside the cover, and had them then look up the word "Beneficial" or the word "Service".  To have some fun, the third graders looked up to longest word in the English language and other fun words.  Many of the third grade teachers incorporate the dictionaries in their lessons.  Pictured above with a class is Dictionary Project Chair Matt Greene.

Two of the twelve areas of Rotary worldwide focus are Youth Service and Vocational Service.  Northlake Mandeville Rotary's support of the Northshore Technical Community College addresses both of these focus areas.  During discussions with NTCC leadership on how our club could help advance NTTC, our members found that many of the students at NTCC are from low-income or single parent families.  To help these students, the school has opened a Food Pantry which is constantly in need of food.  To help stock the Food Pantry, club members collected food items and delivered the food to the Pantry.

Rotary Leadership Students Report on Their Week

Each year the Northlake Mandeville club sends Rising Seniors to a leadership camp hosted by Rotary District 6840 which is comprised of Rotary clubs in South Mississippi and Eastern/Southern Louisiana.  About 65 campers from the District attend.  This year our club sent 7 students.  During the five day camp, students hear nationally known speakers, and work and compete in small groups.  The first third of the camp focuses on getting to know the individual, since an individual can lead best when they know their own strengths and weaknesses and have self confidence.  The second third focuses on how to best lead groups.  The last third centers on "Service above Self" (the Rotary Motto), showing that service to others provides a path to true joy and happiness.  Each of the students described the Leadership camp as a "Life Changing Experience."

Rotarians Receive Help From La. Conservation Corp

Last Friday on February 24, 2023, Rotarians worked again on the playground we are building at Safe Haven for the children of those being treated for mental issues.

The difference was that on Friday we were assisted by four young people from the Louisiana Conservation Corp.  LCC is part of Americorp and is like the old Civilian Conservation Corp.  These young people helped us load and distribute 300 cubic yards of rubberized mulch which will be the floor of the playground.  They were highly motivated, had positive can-do attitudes, and worked hard the entire morning. They were a joy to work with.  Our country will be in good hands with young people like them.  With their help, we were able to load wheelbarrows and spread 30% more mulch in half the time versus the previous week.

Thanks to Breana, Jo, Emily, and Hunter!  They are scheduled to help us for another day in April.

2019: Installation Luncheon

On Thursday, June 27, 2019, the Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Club had its Installation Luncheon and Reid Falconer served as the Master of Ceremonies.  Outgoing President, Steve Saux, gave his President's Farewell and presented a variety of awards to members as shown in the pictures below.  Assistant Governor Vicky Magas swore in the new Board of Directors, its officers, and incoming President Leanne Truehart.  Incoming District #6840 Governor Bob Haeuser and his wife Jamie Haeuser also addressed the club to congratulate its new officers, highlight the club's achievements, and present Rotary's new emphasis of making Rotary events more family-inclusive.  The lunch was prepared by Chef Hosie at the Beau Chene Country Club and a good time was had by all.  We look forward to a terrific year ahead and invite you, visitors to this website, to join us at a meeting and come experience the wonder, fellowship, and fun of Rotary!

Work project in Cozumel

In May, 2019, members of our club attended a multi-district meeting that took place on a cruise.  Attendees included Rotarians from Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas!  In addition to some fabulous speakers, members also participated in a service project.  We helped to renovate a drug treatment center in Cozumel for at-risk youth. Great way to put service into practice, especially at a Rotary event!
